How To Develop A Healthy Relationship With Your Money

your-relationship-with-moneyThe subject of money is known to conjure up mixed feelings.

This is even more common among those who were brought up to believe that money is not something you talk about, except when complaining about how it is never enough.

I once asked my mentor how he is able to attract a lot of money his way and he gave me an answer I will never forget.

“Money is my brother” he replied, and then it struck me.

Your relationship with money determines how much of it you attract into your life.

In this article, we will explore five important elements that sustain healthy relationships with friends and family, and how these can be applied to money.

1. Trust

Every good relationship has to have an element of mutual trust.  It is easy to believe that you can trust money to get you out of a tight situation. The question is: can money trust you to put it to its best use?

How often have you diverted from a solid plan of how to spend your money as soon as you actually got it? If you are like most people, you probably keep throwing your ‘noble’ plans outside the window and spend your money on the spur of the moment.

2. Respect

We all tend to respect people who are close to us but when it comes to money, the story is very different. How you spend your money has a bearing on the level of respect you place on it. If you work hard for money only to waste it, then you are clearly never going to have it in plenty.

3. Appreciation

No one likes to be taken for granted by family and people they consider as friends. How do you relate to people who do not appreciate you? In most cases, you would want to avoid those people as much as possible. The same applies to money. If you cannot appreciate what you’ve got, the likelihood of getting more becomes pretty slim.

4. Understanding

How often do you hang around people you do not understand? Probably never. Now how do you expect to attract money to yourself if you don’t understand how it works? By improving your financial education, you can increase your chances of being an understanding friend to money.

5. Love

The Bible says the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10).  People who love money and will do anything to get it in most cases end up dead broke, frustrated and unhappy just like an obsessed lover. Interestingly, you don’t have to love money for it to be attracted to you.

To nurture a sustainable healthy relationship with your money, work on these five elements and you will find that opportunities to attract more money will present themselves.

Your duty is to take advantage of those opportunities which in some cases may be disguised as hard work.
